About four times as many needy and homeless dental patients will immediately be able to receive services thanks to a donation by HSPS to Share a Smile, a nonprofit Provo-based organization, who provides dental care to local homeless individuals through volunteer hours of local dental professionals and predental students. The clinic has been seeing about 30 patients a month and now plans on serving about 120 a month. Plans are being discussed to expand the service even more in the fall. There are no handouts. Patients are assigned community service to complete as their contribution to dental care services.
In the early years, Share a Smile pushed back dining room tables in the Food and Care Coalition building to provide dental care in the cafeteria. Although in recent years dental facilities have existed in the Share A Smile Clinic, hardware and software resources within the clinic have been severely outdated and as such limiting expansion and growth of services. This week HSPS equipped the Share A Smile Clinic with new and robust hardware and software including other peripheral equipment to help it manage its practice. Included in this donation was the latest version of HSPS award winning Dentrix practice management software and ongoing technical support. HSPS also reached out to other partners to encourage the donation of platinum sensors from DEXIS and a suite of GURU patient education videos from Reality Engineering. In total, this donation has brought the clinic up-to-date with the best in cutting-edge technology which will most definitely improve patient care in the clinic.
We are so proud of our TSM’s who volunteered time and talent for this worthy cause. Within a couple of days, Marc Blaser (HSPS System Administrator), Martin Gubler (HSPS Software Engineer), and Adam Densley (HSPS Quality Assurance Engineer) transformed the Share A Smile Clinic into a modern technology hub as TechCentral stood by to remotely assist. Following are pictures from this grand event!
Chris Oakeson, HSPS Share A Smile Project Chair, joins Dr. Eric Vogel, President and Founder, Share A Smile, to recognize HSPS for its generous donation of the technical transformation of the Share A Smile Clinic. To recognize this moment, Share A Smile has placed a plaque in its entry lobby which reads … “This clinic is generously powered by Henry Schein Practice Solutions.”
In closing, here is just one of many Share a Smile stories as told by Dr. Vogel ...
“There is a woman named Susan who was in her 30s. She had been raised in an abusive situation. Her father then started selling her off in prostitution to buy drugs. She began using drugs herself. She ended up getting married to a man much like her dad. The clinic does care to alleviate pain for someone who does drugs, but does not provide other care until they are clean. When Susan reached that point, she got restorative care from Share a Smile and it changed her life.”
Susan’s before and after pictures …
BeforeSusan has been gainfully employed for some time now and is grateful to Share A Smile for contributing in a significant way to changing her life! This is the work that we, at Henry Schein Practice Solutions, are a part of today!
